Wahrscheinlich war es der. Das mit der Toga habe ich irgendwo anders mal gelesen. Im unten angegebenen Link fand ich folgendes:

"So way back in Roman times, in the time before Christ, a one ounce gold coin would buy for a gentleman a beautiful toga and a nice belt and a pair of sandals. And today a one ounce gold coin will buy for a gentleman a suit of clothes, a belt, and a pair of shoes. And so the gold has not changed it?s value, and nether has the toga or the suit changed it?s value."

Leider gibt´s keine Quellenangaben, es könnte sich daher auch um einen weit verbreiteten Irrtum handeln. Vielleicht besser so, mein Latein ist sowieso stark eingerostet.
