The group, Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International, said May orders for equipment used to build and test microchips rose 9 percent from revised April orders of $995.6 million. Billings for equipment in May rose 6 percent to $861.7 million, from $814.6 million in April.
Stanley Myers, the president of the trade group, said he expects chip makers to continue to increase capital spending this year, with stronger growth beginning at the end of the year or early next year.
The May data represent a book-to-bill ratio of 1.26, meaning that $126 in new orders were received for every $100 billed to customers for the month.
