The Applicant should note the following points concerning the bars to be
supplied for examination and testing:
(i) Although the permitted weight ranges for standard gold and silver bars
as indicated in the specifications laid down by the Association are quite
wide (see Sections 7 and 8 below), the sample bars submitted by the
Applicant for examination and testing purposes should be within the
weight range of 395 to 405 fine ounces troy for gold and 950 to 1050
ounces troy for silver.
(ii) Bars should be weighed in accordance with the procedure laid down by
the Association (see LBMA paper entitled"Weighing, Packing and Delivery
Procedures for Gold and Silver Bars" at Annex D) and should be
accompanied by a weight list showing, for gold, the bar number, brand,
gross weight, fineness and fine weight in ounces troy; and, for silver, the
bar number, brand, weight and fineness in ounces troy (see examples at
Annex F). Weight lists should show weights expressed in ounces troy.
However, metric weights will be acceptable subject to agreement with the
receiving clearing Member. Assays should be shown on the weight list to
four significant figures. The bars should also be accompanied by a further
copy of the relevant colour photograph and technical line drawing for
purposes of comparison by the receiving clearing Member.
(iii) Shape: Bars should be ingot-shaped with the edges smooth, rounded
and not sharp. They should be easy to handle and convenient to stack with
the larger surface, showing the marks, uppermost.
(iv) Appearance: Faults that should be avoided on the top surface of a bar
are irregularities such as surface cavities, layering and excessive
shrinkage. The sides and bottom (smaller) surface should be smooth and
free from cavities, excessive layering and bubbles.
(v) Bars should be marked to show the stamp of the Refiner (which if
necessary for clear identification, should include its location), the assay
mark and fineness, the serial number and the year of manufacture in four
digits. The year should be shown as a separate mark and not incorporated
into the serial number. An alphabetical prefix or suffix should be added to
the serial number of the bar if such numbers are recycled each year. Marks
should be clear and should measure a minimum of 12.5 mm.
(vi) It is preferred that weights should not be stamped on Good Delivery
gold bars since any adjustment to the weight of a bar caused by future
handling or sampling would necessitate alteration to the mark. The
stamping of weights on silver bars, however, is optional. If silver bars are
so stamped, the weight may be shown in either ounces troy or
kilogrammes.
