<font size="4">Stock Buybacks - With What?</font>

Today's papers were filled with stories that corporations were coming to the aid of their stocks with buybacks. How are corporations going to finance these buybacks? Chart 1 shows that as of the first quarter of this year, nonfinancial corporations were sporting the highest debt-to-asset ratios in the postwar period. And, correctly if I'm wrong, but investors and ratings agencies are penalizing Corporate America these days for its high leverage. So, are corporations going to borrow more to buyback their stock? If they don't borrow, are they going to use profits to repurchase shares? If so, does this not imply less left over to purchase productivity-enhancing equipment? And, if purchases of productivity-enhancing equipment remain low, does this not have negative implications for profit growth going forward? So, although some companies may have the luxury of low leverage ratios to enable them to buyback their stock, most do not. Therefore, I wouldn't count on stock buybacks to start a bull market in the Wilshire 5000.

messier hat massenhaft kredit aufgenommen um sich vivendi shares zu leisten, ex worldcom boss machte dasselbe und kriegte mehrere margin calls..soviel zum thema, die bosse wissen wenn ihre shares billig sind...

wenn firmen share buybacks announcen dann werden sie nur announct..ob sies dann wirklich machen steht in den sternen.. ein anderes gesetzes gap welches es zu schliessen gibt..

Einer jener Aktionen von Müssigkeit und Sand-in-die-Augen-Streuen Kapriolen
von Firmen-Chefs welche nichts anderes zu tun haben als mit dem Geld
der Aktionäre, oder geliehenem, ihre eigenen Aktien an der Börse zurückzu-¨
kaufen.


Aber, aber................
dahinter steckt Methode, denn diese Boys erinnern sich an 1998 - 2000, damals
haben solche Programme die Anleger in ihre Aktien investieren lassen, weil
damals davon auszugehen war, dass wenn soviel Geld übrig wäre, um selbst die
eigenen Aktien aufzukaufen, dann müsste es der Firma blendend gehen, ja sogar
sie könnte ein Uebernahme-Kandidat sein.

Diese Zockerei geht nicht mehr und schon gar niemand lässt sich hinter dem Ofen
hervor locken.

Mein Fazit: das allergrösste Armuts-Zeugnis der Neuzeit. Zeichen an der Wand!
