Another Blatant Lie From Washington On Afghanistan
Oct 01, 2003
By Zafir Jamaal, JUS
Nearly two years after the start of the U.S.-led campaign in Afghanistan, the American military gave a bullish progress report Wednesday, saying it had suffered only 31 combat deaths and enemy forces were"desperate."
This could not be further from the truth, as readers of Jihad Unspun know. We have been reporting almost weekly deaths in the hot spot from Middle Eastern news sources and eye witness’s reports. Ironically, this disinformation comes a day after U.S. troops clashed with suspected Taliban near a remote outpost in fighting that killed one American and wounded two others.
U.S. military spokesman Colonel Rodney Davis said Taliban, Al-Qaida and other Islamic “militants” opposing the 11,500-strong U.S.-led force had only three options:"Leave, die or change."
Not so. Both AP and Reuters have confirmed our reports that the Taliban are firmly in control of four provinces, a handful of other cities and are poised to take Kabul. They have new technology, refreshed weapons stockpiles and new recruits.
Davis said the United States had suffered 31 combat deaths in Afghanistan since operations began on October 7, 2001, including the one killed Monday in a firefight near the Pakistani border, a fraction of those killed in most past wars.
"We've been fairly careful about the use of combat force in Afghanistan and we have been relatively successful in protecting our soldiers," Davis said. “That being said, we continue to engage in combat operations to the degree necessary to kill, capture and deny sanctuary to anti-coalition forces. We think things are progressing, we think anti-coalition forces are desperate."
They have indeed been careful. Where is this 11,500 strong force? Having lunch at Bagram? Hell no - they are protecting the pipeline construction, oops - I mean “reconstruction projects”. If this amount of forces were actively engaging the Taliban, there is no way the Taliban could have taken so much ground. The truth is, US forces rarely venture out to engage in real battle but rather provide air support to the allies and Afghan soldiers on the ground as US forces are far to busy making sure the road linking Turkmenistan with Pakistan parallel to the pipeline that will pump Afghan gas for export keeps to schedule.
When asked why training has taken so long, Davis said it took time to train capable soldiers “You want good soldiers, not paper soldiers, or toy soldiers," he said, adding that the national army was expected to double in size from its current 6,000 by this time next year.
He failed to mention that many have deserted and many more have been killed. Further, new recruits are almost non-existent with the threat of death issued by commander of the Faithful, Mullah Omar to any Muslim who side with the occupying forces..
Of course this report comes with a purposes and that is to prepare the American people for a long and expensive stay. The pipeline will take at least five years to develop to profitability, providing the Taliban are kept at bay which is unlikely. And of course American companies like Halibuton are also in desperate need of more profits which they garner from their supporting roles.
Base operations officials at Bagram and Kandahar bases are operating on long-term plans for improvements to the bases, which include building barracks similar to those found in Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, among other quality-of-life projects.
“There is a long-term plan; we’re going to be here a long time,” said Lt. Col. Steve Mahoney, base operations commander in Kandahar. “[The plan] is in a state of being updated. We’re constantly looking at it because the environment here is always changing.”
At Bagram air base, base operations has devised a five- to eight-year community master plan, in which all U.S. troops will eventually move from the west side of the airfield to the east side, said Lt. Col. Paul Kimbrough, at Bagram base operations. The U.S.-controlled bases could end up looking similar to those in Kosovo and Bosnia, where soldiers have cappuccino bars and movie theaters, among other extras.
As far as the actual casualty figures are concerned, JUS logged over 600 US deaths up to June 2002 and a quick query of our database put the actual numbers to date at almost double that which we will publish in a further report in the next few months.
One thing is for sure, information reaching American citizens could not be further from the truth on the ground and the American people are being snowed on this one too. (JUS)
