-->OPEC's Silva: OPEC Considering Trading Oil In Euros
CARACAS (Dow Jones)--OPEC Secretary General Alvaro Silva said the oil producers' cartel is considering trading oil in euros or a basket of currencies other than the dollar to compensate for the decline in the value of the greenback.
"There is talk of trading crude in euros - it is one of the alternatives," Silva told the Venpres state news agency on Monday.
At last week's meeting in Vienna, OPEC ministers expressed concern that the decline in the value of the dollar was eroding their purchasing power.
Silva, formerly the Venezuelan Energy and Mines Minister, is set to hand over his OPEC post on Jan. 1. Energy and Mines Minister Rafael Ramirez said Monday that Silva is a candidate to be re-elected as Secretary General. Indonesian Energy Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro will replace Silva until a new Secretary General is appointed.
The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries will meet next on Feb. 10 in Algiers to discuss production policy.
