If all plans with the Caspian shelf are eventually implemented, the new Baku-Ceyhan pipeline project will cause the European oil markets to collapse, the vice-president of the Russian company Transneft, Sergey Grigoryev, said.
Starting from 2005, the annual supplies of 30-40m tonnes of Azerbaijani oil, 28 tonnes of Kazakh oil, 15-18m tonnes of extra Russian oil from the Timano-Pechora oil fields through Russian pipelines and the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline can bring about an excess of oil in Europe.
Also, according to Grigoryev, large quantities of Iraqi oil are likely to start flowing into Europe as well, while specialists say that the continent will need 80-84m tonnes in 2005.
However, there is a delicate detail in the issue, which is being modestly hushed up by politicians and publicists. Russian and foreign specialists have strong doubts that next year Baku can increase its oil production from 15m tonnes at present to 32m, and to 50m tonnes in five or six years.
Grigoryev said that according to British Petroleum, for instance, with the current pace of extraction Azerbaijan will have enough reserves for the 67 years. Therefore, if production is tripled by the year 2010, the Caspian Sea will run out of its oil in 20 years even though the payback period of the new pipeline is twice that long, he said.
