Iraqi National: Saddam Oil Bribe Papers Are Fake
2004-02-18
Iraqi national Sajjad Ahmed Ali, cited by Arabic newspaper al-Osboa, has confessed to taking part in forging the papers that prove Saddam Hussein's oil bribes, which reportedly went around the world. The list, which featured Bulgaria's leftist Socialist Party and Plovdiv-based private company IraqBulOil, was published by Iraq's al-Mada newspaper at the end of January, and stirred some controversy among Bulgaria's political elite.
According to Ali, the operation for making the fake documents started in December 2003. He explained that four people had been hired for the job, and that he received some USD 2,750 in return for his work. The Iraqi man also claims that while he was working on the papers, he overheard that the forgery was ordered by an Iraqi organization named"Iraqi Council for Peace and Solidarity," or simply"Progress."
However, last week al-Mada's editor-in-chief insisted that journalist had made a thorough check on the documents to make sure they were authentic.
On the scandalous list there are 270 names of persons and organizations, who have been oil bribed by Saddam Hussein in return of political support for his regime.
