Veritas hires Oracle exec
Names Gary Bloom as chief executive; CEO Leslie to remain as chairman
November 17, 2000: 4:36 p.m. ET
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Data software maker Veritas Software Corp. Friday said it named former Oracle Corp. vice president Gary Bloom as the company's new president and chief executive officer.
Mark Leslie, who has served as chairman and CEO of Veritas since 1990, will continue to serve as chairman and retain an active role in the business, Veritas said.
Bloom had been in charge of Oracle's core database business and involved in execution of Oracle's Internet and e-business efforts, according to Veritas. Oracle also issued a press release praising the hiring, saying it would lead to closer ties between the two companies.
Veritas is one of the world's top storage management software makers, making products that guard computer networks against data loss from crashes and errors and expedite data recovery.
Shares of Veritas (VRTS: Research, Estimates) fell $10.81 to $110.19 Friday ahead of the announcement, while Oracle shares gained $1.44 to $28.81. In after-hours trade, Veritas shares jumped to $117.50 on Instinet, while Oracle stock slipped to $26.
