-->Palladium at the heart of new flat panel TV - 7th December 2004
Electronics giant Toshiba has announced plans to launch a television set next year using flat panel technology called SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display).
SED televisions use palladium to help provide CRT-quality pictures without the slight time delay of other flat panel technologies such as LCD or PDP.
SED uses two sheets of glass with a vacuum between them. A matrix of coloured phosphor dots and a transparent electrode are attached to the outer plate, while a film of palladium oxide is dotted on the inner film.
According to reports, Takeshi Nakagawa, chief executive of Toshiba, has said the new television to come to market some time next year.
Toshiba and Canon have made a $2 billion investment in SED technology, setting up a joint venture, SED Inc.
SED Inc will begin producing around 3,000 55-inch panels a year from August 2005.
Toshiba sees SED as a potential replacement for PDP and could phase out PDP screens by 2007, PC World reports.
