The Federal Open Market Committee at its meeting today decided to maintain the existing stance of monetary policy, keeping its target for the federal funds rate at 6-1/2 percent.

The drag on demand and profits from rising energy costs, as well as eroding consumer confidence, reports of substantial shortfalls in sales and earnings, and stress in some segments of the financial markets suggest that economic growth may be slowing further. While some inflation risks persist, they are diminished by the more moderate pace of economic activity and by the absence of any indication that longer-term inflation expectations have increased. The Committee will continue to monitor closely the evolving economic situation.

Against the background of its long-run goals of price stability and sustainable economic growth and of the information currently available, the Committee consequently believes that the risks are weighted mainly toward conditions that may generate economic weakness in the foreseeable future.

Und soeben hat der Nasdaq Composite sein Jahrestief knapp unterschritten. Der Nasdaq-100-Future lag um 21:42 Uhr mit 5,5% im Minus und der Nasdaq Internet Index aktuell (21:50 Uhr) mit 6,7%. Wahrscheinlich schlugen einigen die harten Worte in der Fed-Presseerklärung auf den Magen. ;-)

Schonmal was von Alan's double talk gehoert?
Eine Erklaerung warum sie die Zinsen nicht zu dieser Zeit gesenkt haben. Bush hat fest vor die Steuern wie versprochen"across the board" zu senken. Das bedeutet $1.3 Trillion (Billionen auf deutsch)ueber 10 Jahre, und wuerde natuerlich die Wirtschaft wieder ankurbeln. Dieses Thema wurde bestimmt diskutiert als Bush und Greenspan gestern zusammentrafen. Grennspan, obwohl er lieber keine fiscal stimualtion von dieser Magnitude will, neigt mehr dazu als den Haushaltsueberschuss fuer neue Soziale Programme auszugeben. Obwohl der Senat 50:50 von beiden Parteien vertreten ist, existiert eine 1 Stimmen Mehrheit durch den Vice-President, welcher als Senatspresident 1 Stimme hat. Das bedeutet, die Republikaner sind in beiden Hauesern in der Mehrzahl, und Steuerreformen, welche von Clinton mehrmals mit einem Veto begruesst wurden, sollten diesmal durchgehen.
Das mag Alan angeregt haben erst noch mal abzuwarten ehe er was mit den Zinsen macht. But who knows!!!!!
