It seems NeoCon pundit, David Brooks, sees a prime opportunity to apply what they have learned on the West Bank to the situation in New Orleans. It should be obvious that the same tactics are being employed. The term for what they are doing is ethnic cleansing. It was what was done by the Nazis in Germany and Poland, more recently on the West Bank, and today in New Orleans. The idea is to terrorize the population, get them to abandon their property, and take it over and rebuild.
This NeoCon government has done a pretty fair job of terrorizing the segment of the New Orleans population that they want ethnically cleansed, the poor and black. The interviews with those people who were getting off the buses at the Astrodome was the undeniable proof. After what they had been put through, not many will want to go anywhere near New Orleans. Most won't be able to either. These refugees are being put on planes and shipped as far away as possible, Durham, New Hampshire, Boston, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, etch. By the time New Orleans gets cleaned up, families, friends, the neighborhood, and roots of their Creole culture will be only a memory for most.
It certainly doesn't have to be that way. Sure there were a number of government housing projects were the source of drugs, crime, and violence, and those should have been torn down years ago. That type of housing solution has never worked anywhere it was tried, be it in New Orleans, Chicago, or the suburbs of Paris, but those really weren't New Orleans. There are many black neighborhoods such as the 9th Ward that consist of very old homes build of sturdy cypress that is impervious to water and rot and can easily be painted and refurbished. It would be a waste to tear them down as it would be impossible to replace them today. They are within walking, bus, or streetcar distance from most places of employment and affordable to the many low paid service workers that enable New Orleans to be what it is.
The motive behind the attempt to cleanse New Orleans of it's poor and black can only be profit. The city is an important port and will be rebuilt and the leevees raised and strengthened. If one can use the example of what has happened to intercity black neighborhoods here in Houston, the government will use eminent domain to buy the houses cheap, tear them down and sell the land to politically connected developers. Soon the old neighborhoods will be replaced by $750,000 townhomes, cheaply constructed, and inhabitated by white collar professionals. They will make it as bland and uncultured as the suburbia they left. That's not what people go to New Orleans to see.
(sehr brisant, aber meisterhaft kriminell).
