Israel is also the elephant
in America's living room that even Ron Paul dares not address. The so called
neocons he criticizes are misnamed; they are ultra-militant Zionists.
Richard Perle, Douglas Feith and David Wurmser were the guys who persuaded
newly elected Prime Minister Netanyahu to abandon the peace process, reject
"land for peace" and strengthen Israel's defenses in order to confront Syria
and Iraq back in 1996. They wrote a strategy piece that said,"This effort can
focus on removing Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq an important Israeli
strategic objective in its own right." It also recommended that Israel use
pretexts for preemptive attacks.
Who knows why Bush let these nut cases into his government, but Wolfowitz was
clearly a huge supporter of these fringe militants. (Personally I think
Saddam's attempt to kill Bush Sr. was a big factor in Bush Jr's susceptibility
to such extremists.)
While there is a very vocal and active peace movement in Israel itself, it is
absolutely taboo in America to criticize Israel's brutal treatment of the
Palestinians and theft of their property, suggest that America should not
support these actions or point out that Israel has committed at least as many
illegal terrorist attacks against Palestinians as Palestinians have committed
against Israelis, and that their body count is far, far higher.
One of the great ironies is that higher proportions of Jewish Americans than
almost any other group have been opposed to the invasion of Iraq from the start
and several of the most prominent peace organizations in America are led by
Jewish Americans.
I personally am a member of both Tikkun and Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, but our
voices are nothing compared to AIPAC, which had more than 4000 attendees at its
latest national conference, including more than 100 US Congressmen and
Senators, Hillary Clinton and VP Cheney (who was a featured speaker). AIPAC is
run by people who, like the so-called"neocons," appear to be suffering from
"battered child syndrome," rationalizing that the Nazi genocide justifies any
level of brutality against the Palestinian people in order to wrest a Jewish
state from Palestinian lands.
America is in the thick of all of this. We had our oil cut off in 1973. Three
thousand people died on 9/11. But for some reason, no one has the courage to
talk about the elephant in our living room.

So was zu lesen wäre in keinem deutschen Medium denkbar, die"Amok-Säufer"
