Your questions answered
On 14 September we made an announcement to the Stock Exchange regarding market changes and expectations for growth in assets and profits in 2007.
In light of the continuing extreme global liquidity crisis, which is impacting markets around the world, we have had to slow down our lending activities and will continue to do so until markets normalise.
Given the slowing growth, we now anticipate profit before tax for 2007 being less that previously envisaged, although still at £500 - £540 million, illustrating that the company continues to generate a profit.
The support of the Bank of England reflects a recognition that Northern Rock is solvent, exceeds its regulatory capital requirement and has a good quality loan book. In these extreme times we are pleased to have a high quality asset base and remain confident in the excellence of our strong customer franchise, our efficient business platform and our well-known brand.
Why have you borrowed money from the Bank of England?
Whilst we remain caught up in this global market crisis we felt it responsible to agree an additional funding facility with the Bank of England. This facility allows us to raise an appropriate amount of funds, if necessary. This additional source of funding will enable Northern Rock to manage more effectively the current, extreme market conditions.
Other banks around the world have set up similar facilities with their own central banks.
Are my Savings safe?
Yes. Our relationships with our customers are of paramount importance to us and there will be no change to your account or the service we will provide to you.
Operationally, the company remains in good shape and the fundamental strengths of the business and brand remain unchanged.
Remember that the share price does not have any direct impact on your savings.
