NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Motorola Inc. said Tuesday it will slash 7,000 more jobs - bringing total job cuts to more than 16,000 - as the world's second-largest mobile phone maker struggles with slowing sales of cellphones, pagers, semiconductors and other products.
The latest layoff announcement brings the total number of planned cuts since December to about 11 percent of its global work force.
Last month, Motorola announced it was eliminating 4,000 jobs from its semiconductor business
In addition, the Schaumburg, Ill.-based company had trimmed 2,500 jobs at its cellphone manufacturing facility in Harvard, Ill., in January, a month after disclosing 2,870 layoffs in Iowa, Florida and Ireland as part of a money-saving shift to more outsourcing.
