PETER R. FISHER
Biographical Summary
Peter R. Fisher, executive vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, head of the bank's markets group and Manager of the System Open Market Account for the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) since October 1994, oversees domestic open market and foreign exchange trading operations and the provisions of account services to foreign central banks.
The domestic open market area implements monetary policy through the purchase and sale of U.S. government securities as directed by the FOMC, the monetary policymaking unit of the Federal Reserve System. The foreign exchange area conducts foreign exchange trading and market intervention operations for both the Federal Reserve System, at the direction of the FOMC, and the U.S. Treasury.
Peter joined the bank in September 1985 in the Legal Department. In May 1989, Peter was granted a leave of absence to work at the Bank for International Settlements, Basle, Switzerland. Upon his return in October 1990, Peter was assigned to the Foreign Exchange Function and in September 1993 he was promoted to senior vice president in charge of Foreign Exchange.
Peter earned a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1985 and a B.A. degree in history from Harvard College in 1980.
He is married, has two children and lives in Maplewood, N.J.
