BOJ buying of ETFs may not help market - Nakahara

TOTTORI, Japan, April 17 (Reuters) - Purchases of equity funds by the Bank of Japan, a measure sought by some politicians, may not help the stock market as the bank would have to sell them in the future, a central banker said on Thursday.
The BOJ has been under fire for its inability to prop up the economy and end chronic price deflation. Political pressure has been mounting on it to buy new types of assets such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs), equity funds that trade like stocks, as Tokyo stock prices flounder at 20-year lows.

"If the BOJ buys them (ETFs), it must eventually sell them as well. So that poses potential pressure on the supply/demand balance," BOJ Policy Board member Shin Nakahara told reporters after a business conference in Tottori, western Japan.

"It's not necessarily positive for the market."
