Ad comparing Bush to Hitler condemned
Calgary - A controversial ad that seemed to compare U.S. President George Bush with Adolph Hitler has been removed from its downtown spot.
The sign, on the corner of 17th Avenue and 15th Street SW, showed Bush in front of the burning World Trade Centre and Hitler in front of a burning Reichstag."On Sept. 11, ask yourself: when history repeats itself, do we notice?," it said.
There was no indication of who was behind the professional-looking ad, but Pattison Outdoor Advertising says they didn't sell anyone the space for the ad, and that it was up illegally. It was taken down shortly after a spokesman did an interview with CBC.
"We have not posted this sign and it's not a paid advertiser, as far as we know," Pattison spokesman Gerry Furlan said."The cube's been not for sale since March. And there should be right now, on the face, no advertising."
The sign received little support from passers-by.
"Even though I don't agree with George Bush going to Iraq, I think it's unfair to put him in the same category as Hitler. That's very sad. I'm stunned," one pedestrian said.
Wally Hirsekorn, caretaker of a medical office building across the street, calls it"sickening. Coming from Germany, there's no comparison. They should remove it."
"It's a slap in the face of all the people who perished two years ago," another passer-by said."I think it's dangerous. I really think this is very bad for us, it's bad for our city."
One person supported the sign's intent.
"It's accurate," they said."It's just exactly what I believe, that Bush is just another bad leader."
