Hayami says"central bank won't accept weak yen"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bank of Japan Governor Masaru Hayami said on Monday that the central bank cannot accept the yen's recent depreciation, Jiji Press reported.
According to Jiji, Hayami, in Basel, Switzerland to attend the Bank for International Settlements' regular monthly meeting, said that as a national central bank, the BOJ"can never accept it."
Japan's leading news agency, monitored in New York, quoted Hayami as saying:"It is an obligation for a central bank to defend a strong currency."
The governor referred to the yen's recent depreciation against the U.S. dollar and the euro, especially during the year-end period. The dollar was slightly higher against the Japanese currency at 131 yen on Monday after recent profit-taking brought it back from last week's three-year high above 132 yen.
According to Jiji, Hayami expressed displeasure toward any acceleration in the rate of the yen's depreciation.

Gruss
