Fitch Affirms Ratings for Allied Irish Banks
06 Feb 2002 7:30 AM
Fitch Ratings-London-6 February 2002: Fitch, the international rating agency, has affirmed Allied Irish Banks's (AIB) ratings following the announcement of a suspected fraud at its US bank subsidiary, Allfirst, on the basis that management are confident the expected loss will not be materially higher than USD750 million. The ratings are 'AA-' (AA minus) Long-term, 'F1+' Short-term, 'B' Individual and a Support of '2'; the Long-term rating Outlook remains Stable. Although this loss is substantial, in absolute terms and relative to AIB, Fitch Ratings considers AIB's capital ratios remain adequate and the group will still be reporting a profit in 2001 even after the loss. AIB estimate the group Tier 1 ratio at 31 December 2001 will fall from 7.2% to 6.4%, with total capital reducing from 10.8% to 9.9%. The 2001 group profit after tax will be reduced by EUR596m. Excluding this loss, unaudited attributable profit in 2001 would have been EUR997m. The Allfirst Tier 1 ratio reduces from 10.5% to 7.2% and the total ratio from 13.3% to 10.0%. These capital ratios also appear adequate.
The scale of the loss and the time taken to discover it raise issues of management oversight, risk management systems and controls. Fitch Ratings will be reviewing these matters with AIB in the near future. Much more remains to be found out about how the suspected fraud was perpetrated, but it appears it was sophisticated and likely to have involved other parties.
AIB is one of the two major retail and commercial Irish banks.
Kommentar: Alles nicht so wild, wenn das Rating bestätigt wird, oder nur die Spitze des Eisberges?
