U.S. Military Buys 1.5 Mln Barrels of Jet Fuel, Reuters Says
2002-02-22 04:35 (New York)
Washington, Feb. 22 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Department of
Defense is buying 1.5 million barrels of jet fuel for its bases in
the Middle East to bolster its military operations in the region,
Reuters reported citing unidentified Defense officials.
The Defense Energy Support Center put out solicitations for
1.2 million barrels of A-1 commercial-grade jet fuel to be
delivered to U.S. Star Jebel Ali airbase in the United Arab
Emirates between April 1 and May 31, Reuters said. The remainder
is going to U.S. bases in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the agency
added.
``This is not routine,'' Reuters reported an unidentified
Oslo broker saying. ``This is a large amount of jet fuel to be
moving all at once.''
Since U.S. President George Bush said Iraq was a member of
the ``axis of evil'' traders have speculated that Washington may
be preparing for military action against Baghdad. The U.S.
produced 1.4 million barrels a day of jet fuel last week, the
Department of Energy said.
