WASHINGTON, April 15 (Reuters) - At least three U.S. troops were killed and a number of others injured in an explosion near the southern Afghan city of Kandahar on Monday, U.S. defense officials said.
The Pentagon declined to give the number of dead and injured. But defense officials, who asked not to be identified, said preliminary reports indicated that at least three U.S. troops died.
"There are some dead and injured in an explosion that does not appear to be related to hostile fire," said Marine Lt. Col. Dave Lapan, a Pentagon spokesman."Something exploded in the area near Kandahar."
Prior to Monday, a total of 32 U.S. troops had died in and around Afghanistan in connection with a military campaign against al Qaeda guerrillas and fighters of that country's former Taliban leadership.
