GRANT Fischer, a nonexecutive director of gold miner Durban Roodepoort Deep, stepped down effective today, the company announced. Fischer is MD of Rand Leases Properties, the JSE Securities Exchange SA-listed property loan stock.
His departure does not come as much of a surprise.
Rand Leases is controlled by New Mining Corporation, which is controlled by the Kebble family.
Roger Kebble was suspended from his executive duties at Durban Deep at the beginning of last month, pending an investigation into invalid share issues by the mining company at the time when Kebble was chairman.
Kebble has since stepped down as deputy chairman of Durban Deep, and will retire as a nonexecutive director on June 30.
Fischer is understood to have compiled a memorandum calling for Mark Wellesley-Wood, the current chairman of Durban Deep, to be removed from office on the grounds that he was in violation of residency regulations.
Durban Deep shares were last trading at R42,20, down 280 or 6,22% on the day. The gold subindex on the local bourse was at 2,804.2 points, down 1,64%
