Net profit for Indonesia's tin miner Timah falls 89 percent in 2001
JAKARTA, Feb 28 (AFP) -
Indonesia's state-owned tin miner PT Tambang Timah said Thursday that net profit plunged 89 percent in 2001 owing to a steep decline in world tin prices and what it termed"regulatory inconsistencies and a lack of law enforcement".
Timah said in a statement that net profit fell to 36.8 billion rupiahmillion dollars) last year from 331.5 billion rupiah a year earlier.
"The company experienced serious threats, such as a turbulent business environment, the impact of which is reflected in the company's entire operation and financial results," it said.
PT Tambang Timah has blamed illegal tin miners for flooding the world tin market and causing prices to plunge. The company has said there are thousands of illegal miners operating in Bangka and Belitung, islands off the east coast of south Sumatra.
The illegal miners were flooding the market with between 40,000 tonnes and 60,000 tonnes of tin a year, according to the estimates of Tambang Timah which produces some 40,000 tonnes a year.
This month the government decided to delay the privatisation of Tambang Timah and another state-run mining firm, PT Aneka Tambang, owing to weak commodity prices.
