This is how to do it
By STEVEN HOWARD
THOUGH the words are uttered through gritted teeth, they have to be said.
You´ve got to hand it to the Germans. They never buckled, they never even flinched and they never looked like losing.
All in all, there was never the slightest chance of them joining Portugal, Italy and Spain as another notch on the South Korean bedpost.
Their third successive 1-0 win - this time over the host nation in the hotbed of Seoul - saw them through to their SEVENTH World Cup final on Sunday.
As the ultra-professional Germans denied Guus Hiddink´s side the time and space that had been South Korea´s lifeblood, the words of Franz Beckenbauer rang in English ears like a bullet round a bell tower.
Der Kaiser had said only 24 hours earlier:"If England had the mental strength of Germany, they would have been in the semi-final and favourites for the World Cup."
Instead, Sven Goran Eriksson´s players are back home while Germany march on to Yokohama.
Never was this mental strength more evident than in the reaction of Michael Ballack to the second-half booking which ruled him out of the final.
Twelve years earlier, Paul Gascoigne received a yellow card of similar consequences as England´s own semi-final with Germany hung in the balance.
In one of the most documented pieces of TV football footage, Gary Lineker made it clear to the bench that the sobbing Gazza had ´gone´.
Last night Ballack simply redoubled his efforts and, fittingly, became the player who put the Germans in the final.
CRYING SHAME... Gazza in 1990
It was the latest and most dynamic example of the mental strength Beckenbauer was talking about - a priceless quality the Germans have had for as long as we can remember.
Less than a year ago, Eriksson´s side destroyed them 5-1 in Munich. Less than a week ago, Beckenbauer was expressing his surprise at the progress of a German side he claimed had only one world-class player - goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.
And yet here they are, once more in the final of a tournament they have already won three times.
England, meanwhile, have had their attitude questioned by Beckenbauer and their approach savaged by Hiddink.
Yet skipper David Beckham, predicting victory at Euro 2004, says:"There is so much talent and desire in this squad that the 2006 World Cup has to be a genuine target as well. Who can dare say we won´t succeed in Portugal and Germany where we failed in Japan?"
I dare. As will all the heavyweights of Europe. By comparison with the task England face at Euro 2004, winning this World Cup would have been a breeze.
France will launch a furious assault on the competition they won two years ago to expunge the memory of their cataclysmic World Cup defence.
Both Italy and Spain, smarting from the refereeing decisions they claim ended their hopes both in and against South Korea, will also see Euro 2004 as the means with which to salvage national pride.
The same applies to hosts Portugal while Turkey, in the same qualifying group as England where the runners-up go into a play-off, will be more than keen to prove their success here has been no one-off.
But hurting most of all will be Hiddink´s native Holland, a country bristling with considerably more young talent than England.
You can also throw in Sweden, the Republic of Ireland and a resurgent Belgium. Oh, yes, and the Germans. They have bounced back from Munich if not in style then very much playing to traditional strengths.
Compared to England they are technically superior, have leaders all over the field and operate as a team.
While England players talk about the wonderful spirit running through the squad, there was no one - either on or off the pitch - to lift them against Sweden or Brazil.
Personally, I do not believe we have this vast well of talent Eriksson and the FA would have us believe.
And a growing number of observers are becoming increasingly wary of Eriksson´s one-dimensional, counter-attacking tactics.
To hark back to the 5-1 demolition in Munich and the 1-0 defeat of Argentina in Sapporo is a self-deluding exercise. In both instances we failed to build on them.
In fact since that night in Munich, England have won just three of their subsequent 12 games.
This is not the sort of record which suggests we will come anywhere near making a mark - let alone winning - the next two major football tournaments.
Yet everyone concerned with Team England will continue to trumpet that great days are just round the corner.
But until Eriksson grows more adventurous, until we can field 11 fit players of true international standing and until we toughen up mentally, those happy times will remain forever on the horizon.
