Could Russia challenge the supremacy of the OPEC cartel? Some say
yes, noting that it produces about as much oil as Saudi Arabia. Look at
reserves, however, and the answer is no: Russia simply does not have
enough oil. OPEC members control about three-quarters of the world's
reserves. Saudi Arabia alone controls a quarter of the total. In contrast,
Russia's share is only around 5%. The OPEC cartel has staying power.
