NEW YORK, July 4 (Reuters) - The
former chief financial officer of
WorldCom Inc. WCOME.O urged an
internal auditor to delay her review
of accounts that ultimately turned
up nearly $4 billion in misallocated
expenses, The New York Times
reported on Thursday.
Citing people involved in the case,
the newspaper reported that before
he was dismissed, Chief Financial
Officer Scott Sullivan tried to
persuade the auditor, Cynthia
Cooper, to suspend her review just after she began the audit in May.
Postponing the audit might have allowed the long-distance carrier --
which faces accounting fraud charges filed by the U.S. Securities and
Exchange Commission -- to take a write-off for the expenses eventually,
rather than disclose the accounting problems, according to the report.
