Solar Activity
SOLAR ACTIVITY
--------------
During the reported period, solar activity was markedly higher than
in the previous few weeks. Nearly all of this increase in activity was
due to Catania sunspot group 92 (NOAA 0017), which saw a fast change
in magnetic complexity and activity on July 2, resulting in numerous
C- and M-flares and 1 X-flare. This sequence was only cut short
because the group rotated out of view on July 5.
Another sunspot group, 95 (NOAA 0019), also contained complex
magnetic fields, but showed no strong activity.
On the last day of the week, July 7, a small proton event occurred,
during which the low energy component (>10MeV) increased slightly
above the event threshold for about 8 hours.
One remarkable feature was the dominance of the southern hemisphere
of the sun in sunspot count and flare activity. On several days, not
a single sunspot was seen on the northern hemisphere!
