Euro Rebounds vs Dollar, Yen as ECB Plans Euro Purchases
By Tom Kohn
London, Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- The euro rose against the dollar and the yen, paring earlier losses, after the European Central Bank said it will buy 2.5 billion euros with the interest it earns on foreign exchange reserves.
The euro rose to 87.02 U.S. cents from 85.64 cents earlier and 86.44 yesterday. It jumped to 93.20 yen from 91.70 yesterday. The yen was little changed against the dollar at 107.02 yen.
``This is quasi-intervention,'' said Kit Juckes, chief currency strategist at RBS Financial Markets. ``They're buying euros and selling dollars.''
Europe's central bank said it told the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan of its plans.
Nick Parsons, chief currency strategist at Commerzbank estimates the ECB earns about 1 billion euros per month on its foreign exchange reserves.
The euro's gains also lifted the Swiss franc, bringing it to 1.7505 per dollar.
Kurz zuvor gab´s OS-Euro-Call-Käufe.
