July Trade Surplus Jumps 80% For 5th Straight Month Of Rise
TOKYO (Nikkei)--The nation's trade surplus -- exports minus imports -- totaled 752 billion yen in July on a customs-clearance basis, up 80.3% from the same month of last year, marking the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year rise, according to a preliminary report released Thursday by the Ministry of Finance.
Exports expanded 8.9% to 4.39 trillion yen for the fourth straight month of growth, buoyed largely by a steep climb in shipments of semiconductors and other electronic parts. Automobile exports, which have been brisk since last year, also contributed to the rise.
Exports rose particularly to the rest of Asia, marking a 19.0% jump on strong shipments of electronic parts and steel products. Exports to Europe expanded 7.8%, but those to the U.S. slipped 1.0% for the second straight month of decline.
Imports stood at 3.64 trillion yen, the first climb in a year, with imports of airplanes leaping 267%.
Shipments from Europe surged by a double-digit percentage, while those from the rest of Asia edged up for the first rise in five months. Imports from the U.S., however, declined for the 14th straight month.
Regarding the July trade statistics erroneously carried on its Web site Wednesday night, ahead of the official release date, the ministry blamed the problem on a data inputting error.
The statistics were discovered by the media on the MOF's home page around 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, before being erased, according to the ministry's Customs and Tariff Bureau. A bureau official admitted that the data had apparently been posted"for about four hours from 6:00 p.m. that day."
