-->.S. Farm Income to Fall 23%, to 16-Year Low, Government Says
Washington: U.S. farm income will plunge 23 percent from
a year ago to a 16-year low because of slumping livestock prices
and reduced government subsidies, the Agriculture Department
reported Thursday.
Net farm income will total $35.2 billion this year, down from
$45.7 billion last year, the department's Economic Research
Service said. The profit forecast is 13 percent lower than the
government's June projection.
Most of the decline stems from lower prices for cattle, hogs
and poultry, the forecast said. Drought has pushed grain prices
higher, resulting in smaller government subsidies for crops.
Reduced income may be bad news for farm-equipment makers, such as
Deere & Co. or Agco Corp., said Jason Henderson, agricultural
economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
``It'll make farmers more cautious about bringing on new
debt,'' Henderson said in an interview. ``While bankers have money
to loan, farmers are just not coming in to expand.''
