Global Default (E) mit Grafik
--> Second Quarter 2002 Results
Globally, 56 companies defaulted on $52.1 billion of rated debt during the second
quarter of 2002. The dollar amount of defaults is the highest ever recorded, eclipsing
the previous high of $36.9 billion in the first quarter of 2001. The number of defaults is
well below the record number of 94 set during the first quarter of this year. Thirty-eight
of those defaults were Argentine companies, many of which defaulted as a direct
result of government policy limiting interest payments in foreign currency. Only four
Argentine companies defaulted during the second quarter of 2002. This marks the
sixth straight quarter in which more than 50 rated or formerly rated companies have
defaulted.
