"We had an old Arab Sheikh customer with God alone knows how many million US
dollars lodged in an ordinary current account because, as a good Moslem boy,
he objected to the payment of interest.

"One day he came into my office and said 'Mr Lewis, I want to move all my
money to Citibank.' 'Why is that?' I asked with a sinking feeling.
'Because Citibank have offered me a free Mercedes car if I do.'

"Like a shot, I told Sheikh Whatever that if he would be good enough to keep
his money with us - HSBC's British Bank of the Middle East - we would give
him TWO new Mercedes cars and, like a shot, he accepted."
