-->WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Democratic U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone of Minnesota died in a small plane crash Friday afternoon.

Wellstone, 58, was in the middle of a hard-fought re-election campaign against St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman. Wellstone's name will presumably remain on the ballot.

Wellstone held a narrow lead in recent polls.

The outcome of the race was seen possibly playing a role in determining control of the Senate, where Democrats currently have a one-seat advantage. Should Wellstone win the race posthumously, Gov. Jesse Ventura, an independent, would appoint a successor.
