Still ugly as modest bounce in indices gives way...in 1991 Consumer Confidence rose after the 1990 recession, then plunged again...even worse than has happened recently...yet, consumer spending not only didn't decline in 1992 following this plunge, it actually accelerated to a strong 4.3% year/year pace by the end of 1992...so, the index today may simply be reflecting frustration with pace of recovery, not necessarily a signal of coming slowdown in spending...this index has given false signals before
