Steel Imports Increase in September

WASHINGTON (AP) - American companies imported 2.9 million tons of steel in September, up from 2.4 million tons in August and up nearly 33 percent from 2.2 million tons a year ago, the Commerce Department (news - web sites) reported Tuesday.
Imports have been fluctuating this year since the Bush administration imposed tariffs of 8 percent to 30 percent for three years on certain kinds of imported steel. The penalties took effect March 20.
Imports of steel products covered by the tariffs also increased, from about 1.9 million tons in August to nearly 2 million tons to September. Imports of these tariff-covered steel products increased 33 percent from a year ago.
Ohio steel companies, lawmakers and unions lobbied hard for the tariffs, saying a surge of low-priced imports since 1997 has contributed to more than 30 bankruptcies of American steel companies and thousands of lost U.S. jobs.
The tariffs were aimed at limiting low-priced imports to give the domestic industry time to reorganize and become more competitive.
Meanwhile, companies that use imported steel have complained that the tariffs are causing higher prices. The tariffs also have brought a strong backlash from the European Union (news - web sites), Japan and other U.S. trading partners.
Imports of wire rods and hot-rolled sheets increased from August, while imports of blooms, billets and slabs, and reinforcing bars decreased.
Among the major sources of foreign steel, imports from Turkey and China increased, while imports from Mexico decreased.
The United States has the largest overall trade deficit with China and Japan.
