-->Retailers Facing Worst Holiday Sales in Decades (Update1)
By Shobhana Chandra
New York, Dec. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Sales at U.S. retailers ranging from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to Target Corp. were below expectations, putting them on a pace for the worst holiday shopping season in more than three decades.
Sales at stores open at least a year rose 1.7 percent from the year earlier week, according to a Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ltd. and UBS Warburg report. Sales gained 0.1 percent in the Dec. 21 period over the prior week, the report said. Bank of Tokyo now expects November-December sales will increase 1.5 percent from a year earlier, the smallest gain since 1970.
A last-minute shopping surge on the final weekend before Christmas failed to lift the week's sluggish sales, analysts said. Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart Corp. and Federated Department Stores Inc. have said December sales are lagging their forecasts. Consumers concerned about the economy and jobs are reluctant to spend, and merchants will slash prices further to clear goods after Dec 25.
Same-store sales are an important retail indicator because they exclude results from new and closed stores.
December same-store sales are projected to rise 2.5 percent over the year earlier month, Bank of Tokyo said. November sales were unchanged, according to the firm's index, which tracks more than 80 U.S. merchants.
