SEOUL, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F - News) is planning to issue South Korean won denominated bonds in the north Asian country, a financial source close to the deal told Reuters on Thursday.

He declined to give the size of the expected bond issuance or other details, but the Joongang Ilbo newspaper reported that the U.S. carmaker was likely to raise $200 million in February.

The paper also said some of the proceeds would be used in South Korea, while part of the funds would be converted into dollars and invested abroad.

Market players said Ford was likely to be aiming to take advantage of South Korea's low yields and ample liquidity. South Korean yields have been hitting a series of record lows on robust demand for short-term debt.

Cash-rich investors have been struggling to grab fixed income instrument in a market where no major bond issues are scheduled over the next few months to soak up excess liquidity.

Ford will have to get its bonds rated by two local ratings agency in line with South Korean regulation if it wants to raise money on the Korean credit market.

"Ford may get high ratings like AAA in South Korea, if it issues bonds here," said an official at a local bank.

Standard & Poor's cut Ford Motor Co's long-term debt ratings to BBB, two notches above"junk" status from BBB-plus last October.

The Joongang Ilbo said Ford had mandated Salomon Smith Barney to lead manage the issue. It will submit public disclosure on the deal to South Korea's Financial Supervisory Commission at the end of January, the paper said.

Ford has a number of affiliates in South Korea involved in making auto parts. One auto analyst said Ford could use the proceeds to help the affiliates in their operations or to buy auto parts.
