***TALK OF SPR SALE DOES ONLY MILD DAMAGE TO OIL PRICES
2/25 - - (12:50 A.M. EST) - Oil futures withstood some heavy liquidation
after U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham told Congress this morning that
the U.S. is ready to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve if war
breaks out with Iraq.
Crude oil dove to $35.98 bbl after the comments, but was back at $36.45
bbl (down 3cts bbl) about an hour after the news filtered through the NYMEX
trading floor. Gasoline futures were at $1.03 gal, down 1.75cts gal for the
day, and well of the $1.02 gal low seen earlier in the morning.
Heating oil was off 1.27cts gal to $1.134 gal after touching an intraday
low of $1.12 gal.
The energy secretary's comments were less than clear cut, as he noted that
the U.S. would act in consultation with the Paris-based International Energy
agency before they released any crude. Some 600-million bbl or so is in the
Texas and Louisiana reserves.
