NEW ORLEANS -- Barrick Gold Corp. has asked a U.S. judge to dismiss a lawsuit accusing it of manipulating the price of gold. Blanchard & Co., a gold coin dealer in New Orleans, filed the suit in December. It claimed Barrick and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. made US$2-billion in illegal profits by suppressing the price of gold and selling it short using bullion from central banks worldwide to make a profit from its decline. Barrick said in court documents that U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan should dismiss the case because it involves central bank gold, and central banks are immune from being sued.
