Heiko Thiemes Performance - ein Trauerspiel!
"That seems to be the case
with the American Heritage fund, for example. Although the fund has a dismal
record (a 4.25% average annual loss for the 10 years we examined), it actually
had excellent returns from 1991 through 1993, the first three years that Heiko
Thieme was named its manager. The early 'Nineties was an especially good
time to be in small, aggressive biotechs, which have consistently been a
prominent feature of this fund, which usually holds only a handful of stocks.
Thieme managed to return 96.59% in 1991, which was 66.11% better than the
S&P 500. In 1992, he followed that with a more modest 19.27% return which
nevertheless trounced the S&P by 11.65%. Then in 1993, the fund posted a
41.39% gain, more than 30% better than the benchmark. During that period, the
fund's assets grew from under $1 million to almost $160 million at its peak.
Unfortunately, shareholders who invested in 1993 were in for a rude surprise.
During five of the next six years, the fund was in negative territory. In 1998, it
lost an astounding 61.22%."
