-->NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - A federal contract to the company formerly headed by Vice President Dick Cheney could bring it as much as $7 billion, and profits of $490 million, according to a published report.

The New York Times, citing documents released by Democratic congressman Henry Waxman, a contract to fight oil well fires gives oil service firm Halliburton a seven percent profit margin on the work done in Iraq by its Kellogg Brown & Root subsidiary.

The $7 billion contract to fight oil well fires may not end up paying that much, since only a handful of wells are now burning in Iraq.

Cheney was CEO of Halliburton until he left in 2000 to become the Republican vice presidential nominee. Waxman and Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., have asked the General Accounting Office, Congress' investigative arm, to look into,"allegations that Halliburton has received special treatment from the administration."
