WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--Japan's prosecutors office will make a raid on the Osaka Securities Exchange as early as Friday on suspicion of fake trading of derivatives products, the daily Asahi Shimbun reported on its Web site Thursday.
As soon as the prosecutors office is able to gather enough evidence of alleged illegal trading through the raid, it plans to indict Takuo Noguchi, former vice chairman of the Osaka exchange, on the charge of violating the securities exchange act, the report said.
According to sources close to the investigation, the Osaka exchange allegedly tried to make OSE equity options' trading volume look greater than the actual amount from 1997 to 2001 by placing imaginary buy- and sell-orders through its affiliate companies, the report said.
These companies, observers said, made the trick by placing the same volume of buy- and sell-orders at a certain set price. Prosecutors say they suspect that Noguchi instructed these fake deals in order to entice individual investors to participate in the derivatives transactions, the report said.
The Osaka exchange is as old as the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the country's main bourse, but is far smaller than the TSE in terms of the number of listed companies and trade volume.
