Defense Bill Adds $11 Million for Air Force and Navy Programs Powered by SGI Technology
FRIDAY, JULY 11, 2003 8:42 PM
- PR Newswire
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jul 11, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- SGI (SGI) today announced that the House Appropriations Committee added $11 million to its fiscal year 2004 defense bill for military programs powered by SGI(R) technology: $6 million to procure from SGI a prototype high-performance computing system for the Naval Research Laboratory and an additional $5 million for improvements to Air Force F-16 flight simulators.
Congressman Dave Obey (D-Wis.) included the new funding during a recent bill-writing session in the House Appropriations Committee, on which he serves as the top-ranking Democrat, and this week guided it successfully through the House, which adopted the bill on a broad bipartisan vote.
"The funds I was able to add to the defense budget have now passed the House, which is only the first step -- but it's an important start and it's great news," said Obey, noting that many steps remain before the additional funding would be final, especially given significant budget challenges facing Congress this year."If finalized, this funding would further boost the growing role SGI plays in producing cutting-edge tools for our armed forces."
"For years now, Congressman Obey has been a good friend to SGI in the Congress and a strong supporter of the work we do as a company in helping to maintain the superiority of America's armed forces," said Bob Bishop, chairman and CEO, SGI."We look forward to continuing to work with the congressman to ensure the safety, effectiveness and preparedness of the U.S. military in the 21st century."
The increase in funding Congressman Obey helped secure would allow the U.S. Air Force to train F-16 pilots in computerized simulators linked from remote sites, making joint training possible without the expense of bringing pilots and machines together. SGI visualization technology will enable U.S. Air Force pilots to train in actual combat missions, including night operations.
The defense appropriations bill would also fund a prototype at the Naval Research Laboratory's Center for Computational Science for a network-centric, shared-memory, scalable supercomputer. This computing prototype will enable researchers to sustain the gigabyte dataflows necessary for optimum distributed computing and visualization.
Distributed computer communications, sensors and visualization devices require stream rates in excess of 100Gb per stream and soon will need to scale to terabit levels. Next-generation computing technology from SGI will help provide the Naval Research Laboratory with distributed research computational services designed to support the Defense Department's requirements for high- stream flow with the low latency needed to build an optimum wide-area, distributed infrastructure in support of real-time transmission of multimedia and hyper-spectral sensor data.
NRL is the central research laboratory for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and conducts a broad program of scientific research, technology and advanced development directed toward maritime applications of new and improved materials, techniques, equipment, systems, and ocean, atmospheric, space sciences and related technologies.
