-->The Fed must guard against both inflation and deflation, Greenspan said. To combat deflation as its target overnight interest rate approaches zero, the Fed has said it would consider"non-traditional" tools of monetary policy, including buying Treasury notes.

"I trust we'll never have to engage in such policies, but we are in a position to know what to do and how to do it if the occasion ever arises," Greenspan said
