CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- President Hugo Chavez is weighing the possibility of replacing the head of Venezuela's state oil company, a government spokesman said Wednesday.
Ali Rodriguez, the president of Petroleos de Venezuela S.A., or PDVSA, would be replaced by Infrastructure Minister Diosdado Cabello, a key member of Chavez's ruling party, said the spokesman on the condition of anonymity. He didn't say when an announcement would be made.
Cabello, who served as vice president and interior minister before being appointed as infrastructure minister, is one of Chavez's most trusted political allies.
Rodriguez, a member of the pro-Chavez Fatherland For All political party, was appointed president of PDVSA in May, 2002, after serving as secretary general of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The move comes as Chavez's government is restructuring the company following a two-month strike that paralyzed oil production in Venezuela, the world's fifth largest petroleum exporter.
Chavez has fired roughly half of PDVSA's 36,000-strong work force for joining the strike, which ended in February without forcing his ouster as intended.
Oil is of vital importance to this poor South American nation. It provides a third of Venezuela's US$100 billion gross domestic product, 80 percent of export earnings and roughly 40 percent of government income.
