-->UPDATE - SCO reports quarterly profit compared with loss
Thursday August 14, 12:17 pm ET
NEW YORK, Aug 14 (Reuters) - SCO Group Inc. (NasdaqSC:SCOX - News), the small software company suing IBM, on Thursday reported a quarterly profit compared with a loss a year ago, saying it had collected more license revenue for its intellectual property.
SCO shares were up 93 cents, or 9.2 percent, to $11.06 in Thursday midday trading on Nasdaq. SCO was trading at $2.21 on March 6, the day before news hit the market that it was suing International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - News)
SCO filed a $1 billion lawsuit against IBM in March, saying the world's largest computer company had inserted Unix operating system code to which SCO has property rights into the Linux operating system.
Linux is an open source software, meaning its source code is freely available, and developers around the world collaborate to refine its development.
Lindon, Utah-based SCO said it had third-quarter net income of $3.1 million, or 19 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $4.5 million, or 35 cents, a year earlier.
It had revenue of $20.1 million, up from $15.4 million a year earlier.
The company earlier this month said it would start charging users of Linux $699 for a license.
SCO said it expects revenue in the fourth quarter ending Oct. 31 of $22 million to $25 million. It said it expects license revenue related to the Linux operating system to be part of that.
