SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - Broadcast reports have linked the massive power outage on the east coast to problems in the electrical grid operated by Niagara Mohawk.

The company is a unit of National Grid Transco (NGG: news, chart, profile).

It provides electrical service to approximately 1.5 million customers and natural gas service to approximately 540,000 customers in upstate New York, according to a recent press release.

The company is based in Syracuse, N.Y.

National Grid has other operations in New England. Its headquarters are in the United Kingdom.
