Burma plans to replace the US dollar with the euro for foreign trade after United States sanctions banned use of its currency for trade with the country.

All government departments will use the euro in international transactions while private enterprises can also use national currencies such as Japanese yen and Singapore dollars in trade deals. Existing trade deals in dollars covered by Foreign Exchange Certificates will continue to be valid and be exchangeable for Burmese kyats at official exchange rates.
