Durban Deep + AfLease: Merger wird dementiert
-->Durban Roodepoort Deep and the Afrikander Lease, two loss making South African gold miners, have scotched rampant speculation that they are discussing merger terms. A deal on DRD's assets, however, may be on the cards.
Neal Froneman, Aflease chief executive, said he had received a number of calls from investors asking whether a merger was imminent."But it's just not true. We haven't spoken to DRD for weeks because of their operational review," he said.
Ilja Graulich, a DRD spokesman, echoed Froneman's comments."It's all just rumour and nothing else," said Graulich. DRD has until 21 September to release details of an operational review aimed at rescuing the North West division.
The end to the ceaseless rumour around an Aflease-DRD merger will cause some concern among punters, who have clearly been filling their pockets with Aflease stock in recent weeks. Since the beginning of the month, Aflease has spectacularly outperformed the gold index - the share has climbed 27 percent
